Painting Frida Kahlo by Jeanne Lloyd

Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo
1907 – 1954

Considered Mexico’s greatest woman artist. But her work resonates universally and she is revered globally.

She paints surreal scenes of herself and pain. She contracted polio at age 6 and at age 18 was severely injured in a bus accident that would leave her in chronic pain for the rest of her life. She is well known for her numerous self portraits.

Frida Kahlo left a vast legacy of artwork (143 paintings) after her untimely death at age 47 in 1954, but perhaps what defined her the most as a visionary artist was her confidence in using herself as a personal muse. Kahlo once said, “I paint myself because I am often so alone, and because I am the subject I know best."
